ARMED FORCES

There are many among us who may like to go through life using both brawn and brains - and for them a career in the Armed Forces of India , is a preferred choice . The Armed Forces , are real teams , where people work for a common cause; where there are no distinctions of caste and community ; where there is a unity of purpose , and only one goal : TO DEFEND THE COUNTRY

It is not surprising that the only Field Marshal of the Indian Army, Maneckshaw, belonged to a community of just 3 lakh population out of 1.3 billion. The Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, Sunith Rodrigues, was a Christian (2% of the population); and so was the head of the Navy and a few number 2s of the Air Force. And there are hundreds of others in lower ranks, who have selected a career to defend the country.

There are also legends like Major Gen. Ian Cardozo (Cartoos Sahib, as he was affectionately referred to) who cut his own leg when he was injured on the battle field in Bangladesh, and after treatment, joined the Army again to rise to the high position.

As a young lad I was assured that if I was not a doctor or an engineer the chances that I would land a good job were almost nil. But today I am absolutely amazed at the number of opportunities available to young people looking to do their own thing in life.
